Yesterday we rolled out the Sioux Tipi cover and took measurements.
Today Jenni taught felting, an ancient craft that continues today to be an essential skill for the nomadic Mongolians.
Time to set up the Tipi!

Designing Shelters

Students worked in partners to construct a shelter for their little people from our classroom entrance display. Each pair of students was given a set amount of supplies to build their structure. After constructing their shelter each structure underwent the ultimate test. A major windstorm (leaf blower) and a torrential downpour (an awesome squirt bottle).  Many students discovered the power of the triangle when striving to build a sturdy structure. Here are a few photos from today's shelter tests!

Homes of Nomadic People

Michael dressed in traditional Mongolian clothing and
playing the a traditional Mongolian instrument, a morin khuur.
Following our theme this year, "Homes, Spaces, and Imaginary  Places," we began a new unit where we will be studying the homes of Nomadic people. This study will involve examining some of the 30 to 40 million nomads in the world. Nomads are people with no permanent home who move for a variety of reasons, several times a year.

In our study the students will learn about the people and particularly the structures they live in.

Today we talked about the people of Mongolia and Michael shared artifacts from his trip to Mongolia.

Tundra Connection

We had a videoconference with scientists studying polar bears in the Arctic today. Students watched a presentation by the scientists and were then able to ask questions. A special thanks to John a Forest Class dad and one of the scientists on this expedition for inviting our class to be a part of this.

If you want to take a closer look at Buggy One, the place where these scientists are staying check out the following link. This site also includes a live polar bear cam, which I warn you, is addictive!

This was clever...the kids decided to sit in the order of the rainbow - ROYGBIV!
